Depending on your reason for pursuing breast revision surgery, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons may recommend one of the following techniques.
Implant Revision
This procedure is appropriate for patients who want to exchange their implants or correct an issue related to the breast implant.
The most common issues include implant rupture and capsular contracture. With an implant rupture, the implant’s outer shell is punctured or compromised, causing the saline or silicone filling to leak out. Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue around the implant hardens.
An implant revision procedure will replace the implant(s) and remove the scar tissue capsule that is affecting the look and feel of the breasts.
Pocket Revision
This procedure addresses cosmetic issues with the “pocket” created to place the implants. This is typically in response to the implant(s) bottoming out and falling below the inframammary fold. When this happens, it creates a “double-bubble” effect.
Lift Revision
Commonly combined with breast explant surgery (implant removal), this revision procedure addresses sagging and excess skin with a breast lift. If you choose to keep or exchange your implants, this procedure can also address shape and symmetry issues with the breasts.
Scar Revision
If you have large, dark scars from previous breast surgery, you may be a candidate for this type of surgery. Your case will be individually evaluated, and we will advise you on whether you are a good candidate for the procedure and what you can realistically expect from the outcome.

What Is Breast Revision Recovery Like?
You will need to wear a surgical compression bra to support the healing tissues and reduce postoperative swelling. Ease back into nonstrenuous activities after a week, but refrain from running or heavy lifting for at least 4 to 5 weeks. Your surgeon will advise you on when you can resume certain activities.
Most patients need 1 to 2 weeks before they are ready to return to work. While swelling, bruising, and soreness are expected in the early recovery period, many women can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medicine or mild prescription medication.

Is breast revision surgery more complicated than primary breast surgery?
Breast revision surgery is generally more complicated than the initial operation, as the surgeon must address existing scar tissue, adjust the implant, and work around your previous surgical history (including previous incision placements) to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result.
Can I change the size of my breast implants during breast revision surgery?
Yes. This procedure allows you to update your look based on your current preferences. You may change the size or shape of your implants or switch from saline to silicone implants (or vice versa). Your surgeon will discuss your aesthetic goals and help you choose the right implant size and type for you.
